Lecture To Focus On Resilience

The Garden City Community Council on Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Inc. will present Dr. Robert Brooks on October 26th at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden City High School Auditorium. Dr. Brooks has lectured nationally and internationally to audiences of parents, educators, mental health professionals and business people on topics pertaining to motivation, resilience, self-esteem, family relationships, the qualities of effective leaders and executives, and balancing personal and professional lives. He has also written extensively on these topics.

Dr. Brook’s community presentation on October 26th is entitled “Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents.” Dr. Brooks will describe factors that help children and adolescents cope more effectively with stress and pressure and become resilient. He will discuss the importance of empathy in understanding and responding to youngsters, why some children from birth have a more difficult time developing a positive self-image, the importance of identifying and reinforcing each child’s “islands of competence” and specific strategies for fostering self-resilience in children and adolescents, lessening the likelihood of drug and alcohol abuse and violent behavior.
