senior citizen’s stretch class
All Senior Residents aged 60 and older are invited to register for a new exercise class offered by the Recreation Department. This class, named “Senior Stretch” will offer participants a fun way to add flexibility and tone their bodies. Felicia Lovaglio, an adjunct professor of the Dance Department of Adelphi University, will teach this class.
The class will be held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. This 13 week program will begin on Monday, October 4th. The cost of this program will be $100. For further information or to register, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.
fall concert mini series
The second performance of the Recreation Department’s Fall Concert Mini Series will take place this Friday, September 24th at noon in front of 1001 Franklin Avenue.
The music of “Time Was” will serenade residents and businesses with sounds of yesterday and today. Please join our department in listening to this music as you take a break and enjoy your lunch “Outside on Franklin”. The Recreation Department wishes to thank Garden City Center Associates for making their property available for this concert.
senior citizens’ tennis lessons
The Recreation Department is pleased to offer the seniors of the Village of Garden City (residents aged 60 and over as of October, 2004) their own tennis lesson program on Friday afternoons from 3 to 4:30 pm. These lessons will be in a “Learn and Play” format and will begin in five week sessions beginning October 1st. The cost of each five week session will be $100. Registration for this program has begun so visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall to register.
New dance classes added for teens and adults
The Recreation Department’s Dance Conservatory Program offers residents of the Village of Garden City the opportunity to get top of the line training in dance at an affordable cost. The Conservatory’s Director, Felicia Lovaglio, understands the teenager has many commitments and has tried to make a dance schedule that may better fit the middle to high schooler.
The following classes have been added to the schedule and are available to teenagers:
Saturday at noon Jazz for Sixth graders and up
Saturday at 1 pmBallet for Sixth graders and up
Saturday at 2 pm Modern for Sixth graders and up
Each class will run 24 weeks and will cost $192.00. Other classes available for this age group are listed in dance article below.
Adults interested in dance register in half year seasons. These classes will begin the week of September 20th and last for 13 weeks at a cost of $104. Interested adults may take the following classes:
Monday at 10:30 a.m.Stretching for Seniors
Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.Stretch - Movement
Wednesday at 9:45 a.m.Ballet
Thursday at 9:45 a.m.Stretch - Movement
Saturday at 11 a.m.Jazz

youth tennis lessons offered
Our tennis lessons for children began this week at the Community Park Tennis Facility. There are still limited openings in the first session. For information or to register for this program, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.
Women’s wednesday night platform league
The Women’s Wednesday Night Platform Tennis League will begin play on September 29. Various levels of play are offered and lessons are included. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to join.
Matches are played at the following times:
7 pm - Advanced players
8 pm - Intermediate players
9 pm - Beginner players
The fee for this program is $150. per team and includes court time, balls, paddles, instruction and an end of the season awards party. If you would like to sign up or for more information, please call Steve Espey at Community Park 483-2525.
junior team tennis tryouts announced
The Recreation will hold its annual tryouts for our Junior Team Tennis Program on Saturday, September 25th at 3:30 pm. The tryouts will be held at the Tennis Facility at Community Park.
The Junior Team Tennis Program is for the child who is looking to play tennis competitively. This child must be able to serve, sustain a rally, keep score unassisted and has an understanding of the rules of tennis. The program offers weekly drills and strategy session and intra and interclub matches on a scheduled basis. The cost of this 20 week program will run between $225 - $300, depending on the amount of children that make the team. For further information, contact Sue Tarzian at 741-2906.
open house for tennis ladder program
Our Ladder Match Program is a Junior League, Intraclub Program for children ages 10-18. This program offers competitive match play formatted to fit a child’s playing level. The league is organized by age and playing ability. Ladder match players will compete weekly against each other in a round robin format.
The Recreation Department will hold an open house for this program on Sunday, October 2nd at 2 pm. Children should come ready to play. For further information please call Sue Tarzian at 741-2906.
