Garden City U-10 Girls Team Liberty and Team Daredevils. Garden City Daredevils: 3 Oceanside Express: 1

Garden City Daredevils recorded their first win of the fall season by defeating Oceanside Express 3-1 moving their record to 1-1. The Daredevils did their best imitation of hurricane Ivan as they blew through the very strong defense of Oceanside creating havoc on their goalie. The constant pressure by the Daredevils knocked down the strong resistance put up by the Oceanside's goalie who did a remarkable job saving at least 10 shots on goal. But not even superwomen could have stopped the well coordinated attacks by the Daredevils who broke the game open with 2 second half goals. The first half of the game was closely played with most of the action taking place on the Oceanside portion of the field. After having four shots on goal blocked, the Daredevils broke through with a goal by Maggie Bill who rifled the ball into the left corner of the net after she received a perfect crossing pass from Victoria Piscopo. The lead held up until the 23rd minute of the half when Oceanside scored off of a 3 on 1 break away.

The Daredevils midfielders' Courtney Studdert, Maggie Bill, Victoria Piscopo, Lucy Donahue and Taylor Pappas used their skill and speed to turn back Oceanside's efforts to cross mid-field. They outraced their opponents to open balls, skillfully intercepted their passes and made perfect passes upfield to forwards Brynne Murphy, Kelsey Tierney and Jane Frumberg. When Oceanside did break past the mid-fielders they hit an impenetrable defense led by fullbacks' Jacqueline Jahelka, Elizabeth Furman and the stopper Carly Knowles. The defense was so strong in the 2nd half that they didn't allow one shot on goal. Truly a remarkable effort.

The Daredevils broke the the 1-1 tie half way through the 2nd half when Maggie Bill scored her 2nd goal slipping the ball under the outreached arms of the Oceanside goalie. The Daredevils then got a little breathing room when Elizabeth Furman stole the ball from Oceanside and dribbled past their defenders and knocked it into the right hand corner of the goal giving the Daredevils a 3-1 lead. The lead held up to the end and then they celebrated their hard earned win.

The Garden City Daredevils and the Garden City Liberty were put in the unfortunate situation of having to play each other in the 1st round of the NY State Cup. Wishing each other well they went out and competed nobly. The two teams battled throughout most of the 1st half without yielding a goal. The 0-0 tie was broken when Daredevil's stopper Carly Knowles made two spectacular moves to get past two Liberty players and then passed the ball to Jane Frumberg who one-timed it into the goal. The Daredevils and the Liberty played well into 2nd half with only one goal separating them until Victoria Piscopo grabbed a free ball and raced past the Liberty's defenders to score and give the Daredevils a 2-0 lead. The 2-0 held up to the end because of the outstanding play of goalie Kelsey Tierney.

Fullbacks’ Jacqueline Jahelka, Elizabeth Furman and Taylor Pappas did an outstanding job of keeping the ball off of the Daredevils side of the field with strong defensive play and aggressive kicks that drove the ball up to the forwards' Jane Frumberg and Brynne Murphy who kept constant pressure on the Liberty Goalie.

Once again mid-fielders Maggie Bill, Courtney Studdert, Victoria Piscopo and Lucy Donahue controlled the center of the field by utilizing their lighting speed and crafty footwork. Stopper Carly Knowles had an outstanding game. She did everything from setting up the 1st goal to stopping several Liberty attacks. Congratulations to both the Liberty and the Daredevils on a game well played. GO GARDEN CITY!
