Sherlock Holmes Drama: “A Study In Scarlet”

Actor David Houston will perform a radio-style dramatic reading of “A Study In Scarlet” at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 14.

Enjoy Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel that introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson during 1887. This delightful frightening story took the English-speaking world by storm, and became the “gold standard” for modern detective fiction. The performance will be approximately 75 minutes.

David Houston has appeared in leading roles in scores of plays and musicals. He is a published and produced writer of both fiction and non-fiction. His Joan Crawford biography. “Jazz Baby” has been optioned for both movie and play production. His “literary entertainments,” “Lillie”, “Alone”, “Great Scott and Zelda”, Murder and Madness And Poe” and “The Dickens!” have been performed for public libraries. “The Odd Couple Female Version”, “Sylvia”, and “Social Security” have been seen at Long Island theaters.

Concert: “Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble”

Enjoy a free concert by “Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble” at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 17. Classical works will be skillfully and sensitively performed by a trio of exceptional musicians on flute, harp and viola.

Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble was founded in 2002 by flutist Sally Shorrock to foster the performance and enjoyment of musical literature specifically written for flute, harp and strings. The accomplished musicians of Canta Libre have captivated audiences at major music events including: The Music Festival of the Hamptons, Aspen, Spoleto, and Tanglewood Music Festivals, Artists International Competition, The Illinois Philharmonic, and more. Trained at the finest conservatories both here and abroad, including The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory and the Peabody Institute, many of the musicians have performed and toured internationally. Canta Libre is represented by The Center for Creative Resources in New York.

Slide/Lecture: “Antique Clocks”

Historian/photographer Jerry Leeds will present an informative slide/lecture “Antique Clocks” at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 21.

Seating and parking for all programs is limited and on a first-come first-served basis. No tickets are required. For directions (516) 742-8405. The library is located at 60 Seventh St., Garden City. These programs are free to the public and are sponsored by The Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

Ross & Earline “Tex” Spinney collected 975 American and European clocks as a 30-year hobby. This program will highlight 250 of the Spinney clocks donated to the Port Jefferson Historical Society Museum complex. An 18-foot tall 1881 station clock and a 9-foot 6 inch Tiffany grandfather clock (c. 1895) were part of this timely collection.

Mr. Leeds’ expert knowledge will increase awareness about the importance of local treasures. He hopes to encourage a public interest in their preservation.

Origami Workshop

The Young Adult Department of the Garden City Public Library is conducting an “Autumn Origami” workshop for Garden City young adults in grades 6-12 on Saturday, October 9 from 2-3 p.m.

Join origami expert MaryAnn Scheblein-Dawson to learn the ancient art of paperfolding with autumn holiday designs. No previous experience is needed. Just bring your fingers and your imagination. Registration is necessary and begins on Saturday, September 25 in the Young Adult Department. Stop in or call the library to register at 742-8405. This program is made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

News From The Children’s Room

On October 2nd at 10 am the Children’s Department will be showing a double feature of films, Arthur’s Pet Follies and Arthur Saves The Day. These two short films will run for 80 minutes. Refreshments will be served between the two stories. Come enjoy the films and pick up a book for those early in the year book reports.

The Children’s Room has just acquired a new globe. The globe replaces the one which attracted so much use that the many of the popular sites had worn off. Come on in and find New York State.

Storytimes are in progress. Registration lists are posted on the cork bulletin boards. Please check the lists and attend at the registered time. There are wait lists for most of the scheduled groups. Library programs are presented, free of charge, through the generosity of the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
