Strikers Succumbed In Season Opener
Coach Bill Metzler Reviews Strategy with the Strikers Before The Start of The Game
On Saturday it was show down time for the battle of Garden City Girls Soccer teams. The Strikers vs. The Golden Eagles. If you wanted to see a battle of the defense, if you wanted to see a game that was very challenging and physical, then this was a game to see. Both teams fought hard and to their best of ability to stop the other one from scoring and moving the ball. Only one goal decided the match and the Golden Eagles came out as the victors.
The Strikers defensive game plan worked well and with the help of Elizabeth Malhame, Maggie Kiley, Darcy McGuire & Marisa Cameron on the defensive side of the team, they were able to hold them to only the one goal. As for the Strikers midfielders, Megan Martinelli, Jillian Yoo, Jesse Stein, Catherine Montgomery & Kathleen Galgano they moved the ball around the field well and were able to connect to the forwards but the defense of the Golden Eagles was able to stop some of the key plays as well as a few penalties. The forwards Taylor Hennig, Jenna Fuchs & Colleen Metzler did some serious running with the ball. Between the midfielders and the forwards, some awesome combination passing and terrific communication helped them drive the ball upwards. The Goalie made some terrific saves today and prevented a much higher scoring game than what it was. Nice job Katie Trimmer & Maggie Comiskey. It was an all out team effort, but just not enough time on the clock to make the plays count. As the game came to a climatic end, you can here the fans, the moms & dads all cheering and yelling for their team. Everyone was on their feet right down to the whistle.

Sportsmanship was well displayed at this game with each team offering the traditional handshakes and then they each did some chants and formed bridges for each other. They both gathered on the side in the park and had a small picnic together combined with laughter and playing some small games with one another. A great day and a good time was had by all. The Strikers thank all the fans, moms & dads for coming out and watching them play and look forward to next Saturday’s match.
