Mark Barbatsuly
Mark Barbatsuly Mark Barbatsuly, a life long resident of Garden City, passed away from brain cancer on Sunday, September 12, at his summer residence in Westhampton, NY. He was 62 years old.

Mark attended Stewart Elementary School, Garden City Junior High School, graduated from the Garden City High School, class of 1960, and from Roanoke College with a degree in Business Administration in 1964.

Mark was the President of Barbatsuly Brothers, the oldest established fur retail store in Garden City. He was a member of the Garden City Rotary Club for 35 years, the Director of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce during the 1970’s, and was awarded Businessman Of The Year in 1987 by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.

Mark was an avid fly fisherman, hunter and golfer. He was also a very talented musician and the lead male vocalist of the Village Music Makers for 25 years. He was a member of the Garden City Golf Club where he served on the Board, the Westhampton Country Club, PGA National, the Long Island Wyandanch Club and Lawrence Beach Club.

Mark was a member of the Cathedral of the Incarnation where he served on the Vestry.

Mark is survived by his wife, Betty Lind Fredrickson, his daughters, Lisa Lind and Kathryn Moffett, his parents Tom and Tina Barbatsuly, and his sister Carol Efthimiou.

A Memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation on Friday, September 17th at 10:30 a.m. The Barbatsuly family graciously requests that contributions in memory of Mark be sent to: The Cathedral of the Incarnation, 50 Cathedral Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530.

Joseph F. Cole

Joseph Francis Cole, 45, of Mansfield, Ma., formerly of Garden City, NY died on Friday September 10th after a valiant fight with Leukemia. Born in Rockville Centre, NY on June 18, 1959, he is the son of Rose Cole Magovern of Garden City and the late Richard J. Cole and stepson of the late Dr. John J. Magovern. Mr. Cole was Vice President of Client Services at PFPC (a financial services firm) in Westboro, Ma. for the past 15 years. He was a graduate of Garden City High School and Manhattan College.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Claire (Fink) Cole, formerly of Massapequa Park, and his three children, Joseph, John and Megan; brothers Richard J. Cole Jr., of Seaford, Christopher Cole of Ocala, Fl., Frederick J. Magovern of Garden City, Jack Magovern of Bayside, Queens and sisters Loraine Dunn of West Nyack, NY, Eileen Schunke of West Nyack, Rosemary Wayne of Briarwood, Queens and Carol Cantor of Lattingtown, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, September 14, in St. Mary’s Church, Mansfield, Ma. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Joseph Cole Children’s Fund, 1110 East St., Mansfield, Ma. 02048. Funeral arrangements are through the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 No. Main St., Mansfield, Ma.

Mary C. Marsden

Mary C. Marsden (Mrs. Donald A.), of Hempstead, died on September 7th, 2004 of complications from kidney cancer. She was a member of the Garden City American Association of University Women, the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, and was a past president of both the Village Garden Club of Garden City and the Long Island Chapter of the American Harp Society.

Mrs. Marsden was born in 1944 in Bay Shore and raised in Amityville. She received a B.A. in Theater and Speech from Smith College for Women, Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1966. She acted professionally in repertory theater and at the Adelphi Summer Theater. As a graduate student at Adelphi she acted and designed costumes for the Opera Workshop. She was a voice student of Angeline Collins Rasmussen and studied harp with Kay Corkrey. She was alto soloist at Christ’s First Presbyterian Church in Hempstead and St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Rockville Centre, where her husband is organist and choirmaster. More recently, Mrs. Marsden worked from her home studio as a ceramic decorator, following studies in Arizona, Michigan, Canada and Stoke-on-Trent, England.

A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Martin of Tours Church in Amityville on September 11th and interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchoque, adjoining a farm once owned by Mrs. Marsden’s maternal grandparents, where she spent many happy summers as a child.

Mrs. Marsden is survived by her husband Donald, her mother Martha Carroll and brother John of Amityville.

A memorial service is being planned at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Rockville Centre.
