The Irish Society Meeting
The Irish Cultural Society opens its new season with a talk on “Growing up Irish-American in Brooklyn in the 40’s and 50’s.” The meeting will be held at the Garden City Library on 7 th Street across the street from the Garden City Hotel on Tuesday, September 14 at 8:00 p.m. Jack Devaney, the speaker, will relate the experiences which Irish-Americans shared wherever they grew up. He is the principal author of a book entitled “Growing up in Brooklyn: A Book of Memories.” In his presentation, Mr. Devaney will remind the members of the audience of how much they learned sitting on the stoop, of how refreshing it was to ride the trolley in the summer, and of the great tans they could get at tar beach.
Jack Devaney is an engineer who worked on the lunar module at Grumman. He keeps active with aerospace technology as a volunteer at the cradle of aviation Museum. His book was written for the St. Teresa of Avila Alumni Association as part of it fund raising efforts on behalf several charities, including the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Xavarian Brothers and the Carmelite Sisters. Mr. Devaney’s talk will take the audience back to what some call a “Golden Era.”
The meeting is open to everyone. New members will cheerfully be enrolled and dues will happily be collected.
At the meeting Martin Kelly, president, will describe the plan for the Society’s trip to Woodlawn Cemetery on October 9.
