Board of Trustees Hires Hub Consultant

The Garden City Board of Trustees voted to hire government relations and public affairs consulting firm Bolton-St. John's, LLC, to make sure the Village's opposition to the proposed Nassau County Hub Plan is heard loud and clear. The Hub plan calls for a transportation link in the center of Nassau County connecting Long Island Rail Road train stations with activity centers.

Dedication Of Village 9/11 Flag Held at Library

A ceremony dedicating the Village's 9/11 flag was held on Sunday, March 30th at the Garden City Public Library. The flag was proudly carried for the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines of Garden City by Gunnery Sergeant (now Master Sergeant) James J. DuPont, a village resident, while he was serving in Iraq in 2003.

Payment To St. Paul's Counsel Approved

The Garden City Board of Trustees approved the payment of $39,966.33 to Barry C. Ross, Esq. of Bryan Cave, LLP, who was primarily responsible for drafting the Memo of Understanding between the Village and AvalonBay, at their May 1st meeting.

Winthrop Parking Deal Collapses

Winthrop University Hospital will not be utilizing 250 parking spaces in Parking Field 6E, announced Mayor Peter Bee at the May 1st Board of Trustees meeting. The mayor said the number of requested spaces was higher than the Garden City Police Department was comfortable with. The hospital is exploring possible parking agreements with private property owners such as Doubleday.

GCFD Hosts County Firefighters Memorial

The 69th Nassau County Firefighters' Memorial Service was held on Sunday, May 4th at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Garden City. The memorial service was coordinated under the direction of Chief James Meehan and the Officers and members of the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department.

At the annual Nassau County Basketball Coaches Association dinner, two Garden City Trojans were recognized for their outstanding seasons on the court. Senior Michael Mancusi and sophomore Matthew Montgomery were named to the Conference ABC - III All Conference Team. Michael Mancusi led the Trojans in scoring this season with twelve points per game.

Girls 3rd Grade Grey Lacrosse Defeat Wantagh

It's exciting to watch this team get better each week. The girls defeated Wantagh by the score 10-1. The girls dominated the game by playing great defense, picking up the vast majority of ground balls, and completing a high percentage of their passes. The girls jumped out to a 6-0 first half led on goals by six different scorers!

Xtreme vs. Panthers

On Saturday, May 3 rd , the Xtreme hosted the Levittown Panthers. The Xtreme knew they were in for quite a battle. The Panthers are presently semi-finalists in the State Cup. Although the Xtreme have played some excellent soccer over the past 4 seasons, there was not a better display of teamwork then was during this match.

4th Grade Rams Take On Long Beach

On Sunday May 4th the Garden City Rams 4th grade Dillmeier team took on a tournament experienced Long Beach Team. The GC boys were more that up to the task as they quickly jumped out to a lead. In the first minute of the game jack Capatola pushed the ball up filed and made a perfect pass to Peter McCarthey who fired the ball right past the goalie.

GC White Triumphs Over Lynbrook

The 6th Grade Girls White Sweeties played very hard and defeated a very stubborn Lynbrook team 12-7. Both Goalies, Evan Molitor and Lauren Garizio scored goals as well as made 8 saves between them. GC never trailed in the game with Halle Watkus, Alex Riceman, Samantha Dragatto, and Sage Fuller playing a clearing mobile defense.

Destroyers Beat East Meadow

After 3 weeks of divisional play soccer the Garden City Destroyers U-11 boys team and the East Meadow Thunderbolts were the only two undefeated teams left in their division. In what was billed as the divisional title match of the season, against an opponent that in its first 3 games scored 13 goals and let up only 2, the G.C.

GC Warriors (U11) Tie Hewlett

The GC Warriors faced an evenly matched Hewlett on Saturday, May 3rd. GC played tough and carried much of the play with a 2-1 lead, with goals scored by Chris Larkin and Matt Flynn. Late in the second half, Hewlett was able to break through GC's defense to score the equalizing goal. The Warriors played hard, and look forward to their next game and the next round of the Waldbaum's cup.

GC Boys JVA Baseball

As the Garden City JVA baseball team entered the seventh inning of their game against Clarke on May 5th, the team was trailing 12-4. But an eight run rally, capped with a 2-out 2-strike pitch for a single by Pete Bonchonsky, tied the game at 12. By the time the game ended at 8:30 pm, the Trojans had given up two runs in the top of the 8th and eventually lost 14-12.

GC Boys Varsity Baseball

Garden City's Andrew Cauchi pitched four innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out three as the Trojans went on to win 5-4 against Clarke on Tuesday afternoon May 6th. Fred Stutzmann's three-run homer in the bottom of the third tied the game at 3-3 and Denis Rice hit a walk-off solo home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning for the Trojans.

Varsity Track At Seahawk Invitational

The Seahawk Invitational at Cold Spring Harbor last Saturday was run under some tough conditions with stiff winds and cold temperatures. But neither seemed to affect the GC girls as they competed at their usual high level. Two events in particular stood out on the day, the steeplechase and the pentathlon.

Track Enjoys Senior Day

For the girl's varsity track team it was a celebration of four extremely talented and popular seniors at the last home meet of the Spring season on Tuesday that helped GC dominate rivals Hewlett, Jericho and Lawrence. The seniors, Maddie Adams, Katy Daly, Brooke Senken and Lauren Williams were given a fine sendoff with a crushing 140 to 70 point victory over nearest competitor Hewlett.

Garden City Boys Varsity Lacrosse

Between April 30th and May 6th Garden City's boys varsity lacrosse team has played three games. The first came against the Carey Seahawks on Wednesday afternoon April 30th at Garden City High School. The Trojans won the game 11-3. Scoring two goals each for the Trojans were Dan Savage, Will Fuller (two assists), and Matt Losardo.

4th Grade Girls Finish 2nd in Island Garden

On Monday, March 31st, the GCAA Kelly 4th grade girls' team tipped off against Christ the King in the Championship Game of the Island Garden Super League. These two teams faced each other 3 weeks earlier with GCAA coming out on top. This was another very close game with two very good teams. This time the results were reversed as Christ the King beat GCAA to win the Championship.

At the United States Tennis Association's Eastern Leadership Conference, it was announced that Bill Mecca, GC resident and Casino Tennis Professional, was honored by the United States Professional Tennis Association with their prestigious Stars Award, given to the member that has made major contributions to NY tennis.

Our spring session of yoga will begin the week of April 28th. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes.

New Scoreboard For GC Baseball

A state-of- the-art baseball scoreboard is being planned for the Garden City High School baseball field and it is hopeful that it will display a lot of home team runs! The current scoreboard has been in use for close to twenty years and is showing signs of normal wear.

Lucille Holzer Till passed away at Westminister Canterbury of the Blue Ridge Health Care Center on May 6, 2008 at the age of 102. She was born on August 19, 1905 in Kendallville, Indiana where she spent her formative years. As a student at Indiana University she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
